I saw my first incredible bird today. it perched on top of a bamboo pole by my window and then flew away as soon as it saw me move.
I am told it was a kingfisher and that they are quite common... I could be greeted by one of these guys every hour!
There are the most wonderful sounds of frogs and birds and lotsa little geckos, and few free roaming lizards in the room.
These dudes hang around the walls of the bungalow where I'm staying, and every now and then start talking and saying 'Geico' (ha!) 7-10 times... at first it was weird... and now I love it.... even when it's coming directly from my bed corner wall.
For me the most intimidating animals are the street 'junkyard' dogs. They look tough, act tough, and I am told may have rabies. I steer a wide path around them... and keep a watchful eye as they growl when I walk off the main street.
That red sidewalk in the picture is concrete tile about 4" thick covering the subak - which is basically the water/sewage system in all of Indonesia. If you're not careful walking on the street, you can easily step into a crack and find your one leg down 4ft into a hole and the other one at street level... not something to take lightly!!
Insects
Mosquitoes are prevalent of course here in the tropics. Dengue fever is not rare and not common - but something to keep in mind. We sleep within large mosquito net protected beds and they are prevalent everywhere
Snakes
Cobras and pythons supposedly lurk around. Boy - can't wait!
Monkee mind
I'm not quite ready yet to go the Monkey Forest just down the street. I still have visions of the little monkey that stole my food in the Kathmandu monkey temple.... frisky little guy who jumped from outa nowhere right between my mouth and my plate... grabbed my food and looked at me like ' i dare you to try stopping me' ! people around thought it was funny... i was freaked out.
